Description

Geochronological studies reveal that large volcanic eruptions can be linked to changes in environmental conditions that may have drastic consequences for life on Earth. The impact that a specific eruption can have depends on various geochemical but also geographical parameters. Ultimately, eruptions are the final act of a series of magmatic processes occurring over a wide variety of timescales and evolutionary pathways. If a large eruption were to occur, how long would be the unrest period preceding the event? Which effects would such an event have on our society? The aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists studying the temporal evolution of magmatic systems and the impact of volcanic eruptions on environmental and human history. The multidisciplinary research theme will appeal to a broad audience spanning the fields from geochemistry and petrology to geoarcheology and paleoclimatology.

Thematic sessions that our speakers will cover are: (1) Isotopes and trace elements in igneous systems (Olgeir Sigmarsson) (2) Zircon Geochronology and Geochemistry (Axel Schmitt) (3) Volcanic forcing in Arc settings and environmental perturbations linked to Large Igneous Provinces (Tamsin Mather) (4)Tephrochronology (Karen Fontijn)
