Description

The geology of the western United States (U.S.) is an excellent natural laboratory for exploring the interaction between tectonics and magmatism. Extensive mapping and other existing data can be used to constrain the geologic evolution of this region. However, many outstanding questions exist, such as the cause of the Cenozoic ignimbrite flare-up in this region, typified by the Southern Rocky Mountain Volcanic Field. Also, what was the nature of the transition between collision and extension during the Cenozoic, and how did this affect magmatism? Sessions by speakers will include: (1) Structural evolution of the western U.S/The Stilwater-Clan Alpine Mountains (Joe Colgan) (2) Spatio-temporal evolution of crustal-scale normal faults in the Basin and Range (Maggie Curry) (3) Nature and extent of the Cenozoic ignimbrite flare-up in the western U.S. (Peter Lipman) (4) Magmatism of the Southern Rocky Mountain Volcanic Field (Olivier Bachmann)
