Description | Course outline: 1. Day - Crystal structure determination by powder x-ray diffraction (refreshment) - Geometry of diffraction - Diffracted intensity - Structure determination vs. refinement - Powder x-ray diffraction - Powder X-ray diffraction data collection - Instrumentation - Experimental procedures - Least square refinement, Rietveld method - Introduction in least square methods - Starting model - Refineable instrument parameters: - empirical peak function approach - fundamental parameter approach - Refineable crystallographic parameters - Refinement strategy - Constraints 2. Day - Introduction into TOPAZ and/or Fullprof codes - Set-up of a quantitative mineralogy problem to solve - Crystallographic databases - Refinement - Analysis of the results - R and Chi values - Check of the obtained crystallographic parameters 3. Day - Special topics - Quantitative phase analysis of mixture using Rietveld refinement - Ab initio structure determination - Treatment of amorphous phases - Solving of problems brought by the participants. |
