Description

Day #1:

a. The engine of plate tectonics – Lecture (~2.5 h)

b. Kinematics – TP (~2.5 h)

 

Day #2:

a. Magnetic mineralogy (magnetic carriers) – Lecture (~1.5 h)

b. Palæomagnetism – Lecture (~1.5 h) c. Statistical analysis of spherical data – TP (~2 h): Examples (on Excel, or equivalent)

 

Day #3:

a. Geodynamic environments I: Introduction to/recall of rheology, rifting zone and passive margins – Lecture (~3 h)

b. Lithospheric behaviour – TP (~2h): plate cooling model and flexuration (PCM & FLEX on Excel)

 

Day #4:

a. Geodynamic environments II: Subduction zone and collision zone, with info on transform fault, obduction zone, adduction zone – Lecture (~3 h)

b. Modelling global scale plate tectonics: Various approaches, techniques and pitfalls – Lecture & discussion (~3 h) (Wrap up using 1. Palæomag.; 2. Geological info.; 3. Other sources such as structural info., climate indicators, etc.; 4. Kinematics; 5. Geodynamic scenarios; 6. Presentation of Panalesis and future coupling to other global models).
