Magmatism, ore deposit formation and geothermal systems in Tuscany: from past to present

Post-collisional extensional tectonics of Northern Apennines (Tuscany), driven by the eastward roll-back of the Adriatic Plate, induced a significant thinning of the continental crust, asthenosphere upwelling and a widespread heat flux anomaly. Since 8.5 Ma, optimum conditions for the production of crustal melts, and their transfer/emplacement at shallow crustal levels (peraluminous granites and rhyolites), were reached in the Tuscan crust. The progressive eastward migration of the magmatic activity was responsible for the sequential activation of hydrothermal systems now recorded in a large variety of ore deposits of iron, pyrite, base metals, silver, antimony, mercury as well as industrial minerals and present-day geothermal activity. The field trip is proposed as a complement to the DPMS course that will be given by Dr. Andrea Dini on Nov 25-26, 2014 at the University of Geneva. Participants of the short course are highly encourage to participate to the field trip as well, where different aspects of magmatism, tectonics, ore deposit formation and geothermal systems will be discussed in the field. Field data acquisition by the participants will be combined with data processing and interpretation during discussion sessions.
