Description

This excursion will focus on both volcanological and petrological aspects of three Holocene volcanoes of the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone, all of which have been active in historic times. These are Antuco (37.2S), Lonquimay (38.4S) and Llaima (38.7). Llaima, which will be visited for 4.5 days, is in a period of prolonged but sporadic activity that began in May, 2007 and which has included paroxysmal eruptions in January, 2008 and April, 2009. These are dominantly mafic centers, but there are silicic pyroclastic flow and fall deposits in addition to mafic tephra and lavas, lahar deposits, and a sector-collapse debris avalanche at Antuco. We have been studying Llaima since February, 2007 from the standpoint of integrating eruptive dynamics with petrology-geochemistry, and we have amassed a substantial amount of information that will be presented during the excursion.
