Description

Processes related to the syn-tectonic magmatic-hydrothermal transition can be successfully used as markers of conditions of deformation in the middle continental crust. This course aims to introduce the structural, textural and mineralogical criteria allowing features characteristic of deformation evolving from magmatic to hydrothermal environment to be recognized. Using a few selected examples from the European Hercynian Belt and the Andes among others, we will illustrate how recognizing these features can be used to study the deformation of the intermediate continental crust. A specific attention will be given to all macro-, meso- and microscale criteria that allow characterizing syn-tectonic magmatism and vein formation both in the field and under the microscope. In addition, the structural setting of emplacement of intrusive bodies and associated hydrothermal veins will be discussed and illustrated. Part 1: the course – From structural control of magma emplacement to hydrothermal vein formation: Theory, concepts and structural aspects Part 2: case study discussion – Tectono-magmatic events in the continental domain: Examples from the European Hercynian Belt, the Andes and Morocco, China, Brasil. Macro- to microscopic criteria of syn- tectonic granite emplacement and vein formation. Part 3: microscopic observations – Veins and sills emplacement as markers of regional deformation: Examples and thin sections from the Bruès District, Galicia, Spain (microscopy room B23)
